Derek Chisora Early Life and Amateur Career

Born in Harare, Zimbabwe, Chisora moved to the United Kingdom at the age of 16. He started boxing relatively late, at 19, joining Finchley ABC. As an amateur, he won the 2006 ABA super heavyweight title and a gold medal at the Four Nations Championships.

Professional Career

Early Career

Chisora turned professional in 2007 under Frank Warren’s Queensberry Promotions. He secured a series of victories, building his record with both knockouts and points decisions. Notably, he faced Darren Morgan, whom Chisora recalled as the hardest puncher he ever faced. A four-month suspension followed an incident where he bit Paul Butlin’s ear, causing him to miss a title fight.

British and Commonwealth Champion

In May 2010, Chisora defeated Danny Williams to win the British heavyweight title. He then added the Commonwealth title to his collection by defeating Sam Sexton in a rematch in September 2010. A scheduled fight against Wladimir Klitschko was cancelled twice due to Klitschko’s injuries. In July 2011, Chisora lost his British and Commonwealth titles to Tyson Fury by unanimous decision, marking the first defeat of his professional career.

European Title Challenge and WBC Title Fight

Chisora faced Robert Helenius in December 2011 for the WBA and WBO Intercontinental and European heavyweight titles but lost a controversial split decision. The result was widely criticized.

In February 2012, Chisora challenged Vitali Klitschko for the WBC heavyweight title. He lost by unanimous decision, though he gained respect for his resilience. The fight was overshadowed by Chisora slapping Klitschko at the weigh-in and spitting water at Wladimir Klitschko before the fight.

Chisora vs. Haye

Following the Klitschko fight, Chisora was involved in a brawl with David Haye at the post-fight press conference. This led to a controversial, unsanctioned fight between Chisora and Haye in July 2012, which Haye won by TKO.

Return to the Ring

After having his British boxing license revoked and later reinstated, Chisora continued his professional career.

Rankings and Recognition

As of January 2024, Chisora was ranked as the world’s tenth-best active heavyweight by BoxRec. He has consistently been ranked among the top 10 heavyweights by BoxRec since 2013, reaching as high as No. 5 in 2013 and 2020. His knockout-to-win percentage stands at 65%.
